Indy Risk School
Opening Scene
In the opening
scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, our
intrepid hero faces the first of many projects - the Cave Project. During this
project, Indy faces a number of horrible situations:
- most of his support team desert him
upon seeing bodies killed by poison darts;
- one of the two remaining team members
tries to shoot Indy as he crosses a river;
- the entrance to the tunnel is guarded
by a statue filled with bats (and who knows what else?);
- Indy and his remaining team member are
covered with huge spiders;
- a movement sensitive (light-emitting
diode?) trap triggers a spike-laden stake at any one entering a shaft of light;
- they have to cross a deep pit (using
Indy's trusty bull-whip);
- Indy has to cross a series of
pressure-sensitive stones which trigger darts;
- Indy has to swap a gold statue (the
reason why he is in the cave) with a bag of sand;
- because Indy mis-estimates the weight
of the statue, the bag of sand sinks triggering an explosion;
- as the cave collapses Indy has to run
across the dart-triggering stones;
- his "faithful" guide has crossed the
pit and has taken Indy's whip;
- a door is slowly closing behind the
guide and closing off Indy's escape;
- Indy bargains a swap - the statue for
the whip;
- the guide leaves (with the whip and
statue) and Indy has to jump the pit - he misses!
- Indy is saved by a vine and manages to
slide under the door as it slams shut;
- the guide has been killed by the
spikes (remember the light-sensitive trap?);
- a gigantic boulder rolls down from the
roof of the cave;
- Indy just makes the end of the cave by
diving as the boulder thunders over his head; and
- Indy's main rival is waiting with
head-hunters to take the statue from Indy .....
All this plus stirring music and adenalin-pumping tension in the
space of 5 minutes. Whew! that Indiana Jones is one tough customer. One hell of
a project manager!
While some readers are by now probably wondering whether I have lost
my marbles by talking about this in this tutorial on Risk Management, let's
conduct a Post-implementation Review of Indy's little project.
