The team is dead... long live the virtual teamContentsSometime in the mid-1980's, the type of project team that our group had become used to quietly disappeared. It was replaced by a new form of team that has become the norm for most of the business and IT project teams that we now work with the Virtual team. Surprisingly, there has been little attention paid to this new form of team by the gurus of organisation and management theory. While the recent work of researchers such as John Katzenbach and Douglas Smith, Doug Mankin, Susan Cohen and Tora Bikson continues to develop the body of knowledge for teams and team work, the focus of these popular books is still on what we will term "traditional" teams. However, before we explore this new form of team, we need to examine some basic issues with the concept of teams in general. |
