Hot Sites & Magazines

Software Project Managers Network
This US Government site is a tremendous source of best practice hints and other useful information. Highly recommended.

All Project Management
This is an interesting site. It has a mix of great links, vendor-related information and other stuff that project managers should be across. For example, check out the link into the State of Kansas Project Management handbook. A great site.

European Software Engineering group
We received Email from a person in Europe who put us on to the Web Site for the European Software Engineering group. It is a truly awesome site containing heaps of information, articles and discussions on software engineering. It is interesting how different the Europeans are in their attitude towards formal process as compared to the prevalent "cowboy" culture of the US, Canada and Australia. Visit and make up your own minds.

A Business Researcher's Interests
What a brilliant site. This site is a superb reference to articles, magazines and other sites on Knowledge Management, Information Technology, Virtual Organisations, Outsourcing and other hot topics. The site contains hot links to all my favorite magazines and newspapers. It is really brilliant. 10/10.

Fortune
We have been very remiss in not recommending this site and magazine earlier. We have always enjoyed this magazine and over many years have found terrific articles on companies, trends and futures. For example, Thomas Stewart broke the concept of Intellectual Capital in 1991 long before it became "trendy".

Business Week
Another great business and trend magazine that we have found extremely valuable. The August 18, 1997 issue on Silicon Valley [the people and the culture] was just great. This site also has some really interesting links.

Strategy and Business
Woah! This is one heavy magazine. We like it as much as the Harvard Business Review and that’s saying something. It is published by Booz Allen and Hamilton and every issue we have seen contains some really interesting and “left-field” management and organisation writings. For example, the Second Quarter 1997 issue had great articles on how George Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic manage creative people. Awesome stuff.

Fast Company
It's the WIRED of business magazines. Looks cool and contains really good articles and many are very relevant to the world of project and team managers. The June/July issue for example had great articles on Microsoft's Wonder Women and Denmark's Oticon organisation which is a pure prooject organisation - you should see their project work spaces. We have also included a hot link to their Web Site.

Discover
Camille and I have always liked this magazine. It is a high quality science-oriented mag that always contains some useful and "left field" ideas for those of us who are interested in the behaviour of systems such as organisations, people and projects. This year has had two especially interesting covers dealing with Risk and Risk Assessment and Creativity. On their Web Site you can access back issues. Well worth a visit.

American Programmer
I am on the Editorial Board of this magazine and strongly recommend that you get a subscription. It is simply the best IT magazine. The title is mis-leading as it is about the "bigger issues" of computing. [Cutter Information who publish the magazine and a number of other very powerful subscription-only IT-related publications] are considering changing the title. My friend Ed Yourdon is the Editor and other members of the Board include Tom DeMarco, Paul Strassman and Bill Curtis.

The Cutter Company
This is the company that publishes American Programmer and other excellent magazines. This site can get you to Ed Yourdon's site which can then get you to Tom DeMarco's and other brilliant web sites.
